Anton Christian was born in 1940 as Anton Christian Kirchmayr in Innsbruck, Tyrol. His artistic interest was already in his cradle, as his father was himself a restorer and painter and ran a painting school.

From 1954 to 1958 Christian studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Innsbruck, and then - from 1959 to 1963 - at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Herbert Boeckl and Josef Dobrowsky. After graduating, he chose his middle name as his surname and went to Paris for two years, where he studied at the Acadèmie des Beaux-Arts and met Paul Celan.
During his stay in London from 1969 to 1971, Christian experimented for the first time with decaying, organic materials. Various objects were created, including showcases with animal carcasses in various liquids.
From 1972 he devoted himself primarily to conceptual art. This was followed by lectures and exhibitions at various universities and museums in the USA, as well as numerous exhibitions in Austria, Germany, France and Switzerland.

Anton Christian prefers to work in cycles, focusing on the theme of "human".

For his artistic work he was awarded the Prize of the City of Innsbruck for Painting in 1969 and in 1997 he was not only awarded the Badge of Honour of the State of Tyrol but also the professional title of Professor.

Anton Christian lives and works in Natters, Tyrol.
