Johannes Fessl was born in the so called Waldviertel (Lower Austria). From 1966 to 1970 he studied at the Academy for Graphics in Vienna. After receiving his degree he worked as a freelance painter, graphic designer and illustrator. In 1983 he opened the “Atelier-Galerie” in Waldviertel, together with his wife.

His artistic techniques were oil painting, oil tempera, tempera, water colours, drawing, etching and woodcut. One of his favourite motifs was the area of Waldviertel and bizarre scenes from everyday life.

After Fessl’s sudden death in 1997 his life’s work was continued by his wife and daughter through the “Galerie Edition Zwettltal”.
