Kubin Alfred

Leitmeritz *1877 - †1959 Zwickledt

Alfred Kubin was born in Leitmeritz, North Bohemia. Between 1892 and 1896 he learned the profession of a photographer in Klagenfurt and finally began his studies at the Academy in Munich 1899. He quit early and moved to the remote village Zwickledt in Upper Austria. There he lived reclusively, but was in contact with many artists until his death. The narrative, the fantastic and grotesque, the elements of irony and satirical are very important in Alfred Kubin’s oeuvre. He was a graphic artist and writer at the same time. Kubin has a unique position within the Austrian art history of the 20th century.
