Walter Navratil identified himself with the Austrian Art brut: his pictures reflect a spiritual world that perceives reality as a non-uniform, rationally inscrutable, fantastic construct.

Walter Navratil was born in 1950 in Klosterneuburg, Lower Austria. Both his parents were psychiatrists, which meant that he grew up in the institution's own official residence in Gugging. He had close contact with patients of the House of Artists, including Tschirtner and Walla. In the 1970s he began his own painterly work. In 1998 he had a solo exhibition at the Bawag Foundation in Vienna.
