Herbert Brandl is one of the internationally most renowned Austrian artists and is called a representative of Neo-Expressionism. The subject of his art is nature, a sujet that nowadays nearly is lost in painting. Brandl paints abstract as well as realistic, with brush, broom and hands, rhythmic and most of the time at high speed.
Brandl was born in 1959 in Graz. He studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna with Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel. In the 1980ies his career speeded up rapidly. But he never saw himself as part of the so-called Neue Wilde (a group of Austrian expressionist painters in the 1980s). Brandl took part in the Documenta in Kassel and represented Austria at the Venice Biennale 2007.
