Johannes Fessl was born in Waldviertel, Lower Austria. He studied from 1966 to 1970 at the Academy for Graphics in Vienna. After he did his degree he worked as a freelance painter, graphic designer and illustrator. Fessl moved to Waldviertel in 1983, where he opened the Atelier-Galerie in Wurmbrand near Groß Gerungs, together with his wife.

His artistic techniques were oil painting, oil tempera, tempera, water colours, drawing, etching and woodcut. One of his favourite motifs was the area of Waldviertel and bizarre scenes from everyday life.

After Fessl’s sudden death 1997 his life’s work was continued by his wife and daughter through the Galerie Edition Zwettltal.
