Alfred Kubin was born in 1877 in Leitmeritz, Northern Bohemia. Between 1892 and 1896 he completed an apprenticeship as a photographer in Klagenfurt and finally studied at the Academy in Munich in 1899. He stopped his studies prematurely and moved to the remote village of Zwickledt in Upper Austria in 1907. There he lived secludedly until his death, but was nevertheless in contact with many artists. The narrative, the fantastic and the grotesque, the elements of irony and satire occupy a large part of Alfred Kubin's work - he was a writer and draughtsman at the same time - and secure him a unique position in 20th century Austrian art history.
