Franz Wlcek is considered as important representative of Austrian landscape painting of the 20th century. Still lifes, portraits and nudes represent a smaller part of his work.

The heavy chromaticity of his paintings is enhanced by the passionate and impulsive brushwork. The artistic language is expressive, like Wlcek’s teacher Josef Dobrowsky showed him. The motifs of Wlcek’s oil- and tempera-paintings as well of his watercolours derive from his home Wachau, the Mostviertel and the Alpenvorland, from Vienna and surroundings. Numerous travels brought Wlcek to Sweden, Norway and Italy, where he depicted his impressions.
